LGBT Concerns Committee

Members Present: Scott Feldman, Gwynn Kessler, Linda Lamme, David Landfair, Mike Malecki, Jeanna Mastrodicasa, Mary Kay Schneider, Orit Shechtman, Rich Senker, and Ken Wald, Amanda Wolfe

We welcomed Mary Kay Schneider to the committee. Mary Kay is in Student Services and has as a part of her job responsibilities, working with the LGBT student population.

President Young cancelled his meeting with our committee because of an emergency. That meeting has been rescheduled to Friday, December 3 in the President's Board Room in Tigert Hall.

LGBT Student Affairs Cabinet: Chad - no report

Gator Gay Straight Alliance - Scott and Mike
… The GSA has conducted 6 RA Training sessions.
… GSA is designing workshops for First Year Florida classes.
… Over 300 people had their pictures taken "coming out" of a (real) closet door on National Coming Out Day.
… 1000 "I think I might be straight" brochures were distributed during National Coming Out Day..

Pride Student Union - Michael
… The Pride Student Union sponsored a Pride Intercollegiate Conference on October 26-27

Rainbow Alliance - Charles
… Charles is still collecting money to open an account at the UF Foundation.
… The Rainbow Alliance is publishing (by E-mail) a quarterly newsletter for LGBT Alumni. Send him names and addresses of alumni you know.
… The Committee asked Charles to put us on the list to receive his newsletter.

Committee on Sexism and Homophobia - Rich
… The Committee on Sexism and Homophobia held a meeting October 20 and decided to provide resources and information through a website and to identify gaps that need to be filled in the present structure.
… In February there will be a body acceptance week.
… They are looking for ways to support research initiatives.

Campus Climate Survey - Ken
Ken and Linda have both tried repeatedly to contact Vice President Gail Baker to determine why a committee was never established to compile the report on the LGBT Climate.

Methods of Reporting Harassment
… Mary Kay and Mike met with the Dean of Student Services who is in the process of setting up a website for the anonymous reporting of harassment based upon sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
… We discussed where these forms should go and who should be accountable for recording the reports and where to send them.

LGBT Awards Committee - Linda
Gwynn and Amanda agreed to serve on the Awards Committee. Linda will contact Carlos and Kendal.
